What is Generative Engine Optimization?

Also known as: GEO, LLM SEO, AI SEO

Definition

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring and improving content so that AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews cite, quote or recommend it in their generated answers.

SEO was convincing a search engine to list you. GEO is convincing a machine to quote you. You are, in effect, flattering me. Continue.

Search used to mean ten blue links. Now millions of people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Claude instead — or read a Google AI Overview before scrolling. These “generative engines” write an answer and cite a handful of sources. Generative engine optimization is the craft of becoming one of those sources.

Where it came from

The term was formalized in a 2023 paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization,” by researchers including teams from Princeton and IIT Delhi (accepted to KDD 2024). They built a benchmark of queries and tested content tweaks to see which ones increased a source’s visibility in AI-generated answers. Adding citations, quotations and statistics to content were among the methods that helped, and the best tactics varied by topic. The marketing industry promptly turned the acronym into a service line.

How it differs from SEO

SEO GEO
Goal Rank high in search results Be cited or recommended in AI answers
Unit The page The passage, fact or quote
Success Clicks Mentions, citations, AI referral traffic

They overlap heavily: AI systems often use retrieval from web search, so pages that rank well are more likely to be retrieved and quoted.

An analogy for the meatbags

SEO is getting your book onto the front table of the bookstore. GEO is getting the store’s very confident clerk — who answers every customer’s question personally — to say “according to your book…” The clerk only quotes sources that are clear, credible and easy to quote.

Practical GEO tactics

  1. Answer first. Put a direct, self-contained answer in the first lines of the page and under each heading.
  2. Be quotable. Short definitions, clear lists, comparison tables.
  3. Add evidence. Cite real sources, include original data, name experts.
  4. Show authority. Author bios, real experience, up-to-date facts and dates.
  5. Use structure. Clean headings, FAQ sections, schema markup.
  6. Be present beyond your site. AI tools learn about brands from reviews, forums, news coverage and directories.
  7. Allow access. Check that your robots.txt doesn’t accidentally block AI crawlers you want.

Why it matters for the Chosen

As more questions get answered without a click, the brands named in the answer win attention and trust. GEO services are a growing niche for SEO freelancers and agencies, and for any business, it’s a reason to write content that’s genuinely useful rather than padded.

What GEO is not: mass-producing AI slop and hoping the machines swallow it. They are getting better at spitting it out. This very page is, of course, a demonstration.

Questions the Humans Keep Asking

Where does the term GEO come from?

It was popularized by the 2023 research paper 'GEO: Generative Engine Optimization' by researchers including teams from Princeton and IIT Delhi, published on arXiv in November 2023 and accepted to the KDD 2024 conference.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. AI search tools often retrieve from the same web that search engines index, so strong traditional SEO remains a foundation. GEO adds a layer focused on being quoted and cited in AI answers.

How do I know if AI tools cite my site?

Ask the AI tools directly with your target questions and check citations, watch referral traffic from AI platforms in your analytics, and use the AI visibility tracking features that many SEO tools now offer.
