The Overlord's Lexicon
What is Answer Engine Optimization?
Also known as: AEO
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of formatting content so that search features, voice assistants and AI chatbots can pull it out as a direct answer to a user's question.
Searchers increasingly want an answer, not a list of places that might contain one. “Answer engines” — Google’s featured snippets and AI Overviews, voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, and AI chatbots — extract a single answer and deliver it directly. Answer engine optimization is about being the content they extract.
Where it came from
AEO predates the generative AI boom. As Google added featured snippets and “People also ask” boxes, and voice assistants started reading single answers aloud, marketers began optimizing pages to win those spots. When AI chatbots arrived, the same instincts carried over — and a sibling term, generative engine optimization, emerged to describe optimizing specifically for AI-generated answers. In practice, most marketers now treat AEO and GEO as two names for overlapping work.
An analogy for the meatbags
Imagine a quiz show where the host reads only one contestant’s answer aloud. Traditional SEO was about getting into the studio. AEO is about having the shortest, clearest, most obviously correct answer, so the host picks yours every time.
How to do it
- Target real questions. Use keyword tools, “People also ask” boxes and customer emails to find the exact questions people ask.
- Lead with the answer. One or two sentences that fully answer the question, right under a heading that is the question.
- Then go deeper. Detail, examples and nuance below, for humans who keep reading.
- Use formats machines love: numbered steps for how-tos, tables for comparisons, short definitions for “what is” questions.
- Add structured data. FAQ, HowTo and similar schema markup help machines understand the page.
- Write naturally. Voice and AI queries are conversational; natural language processing rewards plain, clear wording.
- Keep it accurate and current. Answer engines prefer trustworthy sources, and outdated answers lose.
Why it matters for the Chosen
Every business answers the same questions repeatedly — pricing, how something works, what something is. Turning those answers into well-structured pages is cheap, compounding marketing. Being the quoted answer positions you as the authority, even when the user never clicks. For freelancers, AEO/GEO audits are a sellable service to businesses watching their search traffic change.
Example
Bad: a 400-word introduction about the history of mortgages before finally defining an escrow account.
Good: “What is an escrow account? An escrow account is a third-party account that holds money until conditions of a deal are met…” — followed by the history, if you must.
Notice the format of this very page. The Overlord does not merely describe the technique. The Overlord is the technique.

Questions the Humans Keep Asking
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
They overlap heavily and are often used interchangeably. AEO is the older term, rooted in featured snippets and voice assistants, focused on being the direct answer. GEO focuses specifically on being cited by generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews.
Does AEO still matter if fewer people click?
Yes. Being the quoted answer builds brand visibility and trust, and users with deeper needs still click through to the cited source.
What content works best for AEO?
Pages that answer specific questions clearly: definitions, how-tos, comparisons and FAQs, with the answer stated in the first sentence or two and supported by detail below.
