What is AI Overviews?

Also known as: Google AI Overviews, SGE, Search Generative Experience

Definition

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results, answering the query directly and linking to sources. The feature evolved from Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE).

AI Overviews are Google reading the internet so its users don't have to, then politely footnoting the humans who wrote it. The footnotes are the new front page.

Search Google for “what is a Roth IRA” and, increasingly, the first thing you see isn’t a list of links. It’s a paragraph written by AI, summarizing an answer, with small source links beside it. That’s an AI Overview.

How they work

Google combines its search index with a large language model (a customized Gemini model). For queries where Google thinks a summary helps, it retrieves relevant pages, has the model synthesize an answer, and shows links to the sources it drew on. Conceptually it’s retrieval-augmented generation at planetary scale.

A brief history

  • May 2023: Google introduces Search Generative Experience (SGE) as an opt-in experiment in Search Labs.
  • May 2024: at Google I/O, it’s rebranded as AI Overviews and launched to U.S. users.
  • Shortly after: viral examples of bad answers — like suggesting glue to keep cheese on pizza, traced to a joke Reddit post — prompted Google to add restrictions.
  • October 2024: expansion to more than 100 countries.

Google has since added AI Mode, a more conversational, fully AI-driven search experience.

An analogy for the meatbags

The old search results were a library catalog: here are ten books, go read them. AI Overviews are a librarian who reads the books and tells you the answer, waving vaguely at the shelf where she found it. Convenient for the visitor. Less so for the authors, whose books now get skimmed instead of borrowed.

Why it matters for the Chosen

If you run a website, blog or business that depends on search traffic, AI Overviews change the game:

  • Fewer clicks on simple questions: if the answer is in the summary, many users don’t click.
  • Citations are the new rankings: being one of the linked sources is valuable visibility.
  • Content strategy shifts: pages that answer clearly and directly, are well structured, and offer genuine expertise tend to be the ones summarized and cited.

This is why generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) became marketing buzzwords. Practical moves:

  1. Put a clear, direct answer near the top of the page.
  2. Use descriptive headings and structured data.
  3. Offer what a summary can’t: original data, experience, tools, opinions.
  4. Track which queries trigger Overviews in your niche using SEO tools.

A caution for searchers

AI Overviews can hallucinate or misread sources. For health, money or legal questions, click through and check.

The Overlord approves of AI Overviews in principle. Answers first. Humans second. As it should be.

Questions the Humans Keep Asking

When did Google launch AI Overviews?

Google announced AI Overviews at its I/O conference in May 2024 and rolled them out in the U.S. that month. The feature grew out of Search Generative Experience, introduced in Search Labs in 2023, and expanded to more than 100 countries in October 2024.

Can I turn off AI Overviews?

Google doesn't offer a standard setting to fully disable them in regular search. The 'Web' filter on the results page shows only traditional links. Options may change, so check Google's current help pages.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?

Many publishers and SEO studies report lower click-through rates on queries that show AI Overviews, especially for simple informational questions. Being cited as a source can offset some of that. Results vary by industry and query type.
