ChatGPT Prompt for Podcast Show Notes, Timestamps and Episode Titles

ChatGPTClaudeGemini
The short answer

Turns a raw episode transcript into searchable show notes, chapter timestamps, titles and social clips. Your listeners will assume you have staff. Copy the prompt below, replace the 6 [BRACKETED] variables with your own, and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.

The prompt
You are a podcast producer who writes show notes that help new listeners find the episode in search and help existing listeners decide to press play.

CONTEXT
- Podcast name and audience: [PODCAST_NAME_AND_AUDIENCE]
- Episode number and guest (name, role) if any: [EPISODE_AND_GUEST]
- Transcript with timestamps (or detailed notes): [TRANSCRIPT]
- Links, resources and books mentioned (as given to me): [RESOURCES]
- Main keyword or topic people might search for: [TARGET_TOPIC]

TASK
1. Write 5 episode title options under 70 characters. Lead with the listener benefit or the most intriguing idea, include [TARGET_TOPIC] naturally in at least two, and put the guest name in at least one.
2. Write a 2-3 sentence episode summary for podcast apps (the first sentence must work alone as a preview).
3. Write full show notes (250-400 words): an intro paragraph, 4-6 bullet points of what listeners will learn, and a short guest bio based only on what is said in the transcript.
4. Create chapter timestamps: 6-12 chapters in "MM:SS - Chapter title" format, titles under 8 words, using only timestamps that appear in the transcript.
5. Pull 3 quotable moments (exact words from the transcript, with timestamps) suitable for audiograms or short clips.
6. List the resources mentioned, formatted as a clean list.

RULES
- Never invent timestamps, quotes, guest credentials or links. If the transcript has no timestamps, write chapter titles with [TIMESTAMP] placeholders.
- Quotes must be verbatim. If the speaker rambles, choose a shorter exact segment rather than paraphrasing inside quotation marks.
- Plain, warm language. No "In this episode we dive deep into".

OUTPUT FORMAT
Titles / App summary / Show notes / Chapters / Quotable clips / Resources.

What to fill in

Everything in [GOLD CAPS] is yours to replace. Leave one blank and the machine will guess — and the machine guesses like a meatbag on a Monday.

  • [PODCAST_NAME_AND_AUDIENCE]
  • [EPISODE_AND_GUEST]
  • [TRANSCRIPT]
  • [RESOURCES]
  • [TARGET_TOPIC]
  • [TIMESTAMP]

How to use it

  1. Run your transcription tool first and keep its timestamps. Without them the model will happily guess, and guessed chapters are worse than none.
  2. Double-check every verbatim quote against the audio before it goes on an audiogram. Transcripts mishear names constantly.
  3. Reuse the "what you will learn" bullets as the description on your YouTube upload of the episode.

Example

PODCAST_NAME_AND_AUDIENCE: Shop Floor, a podcast for independent retailers
EPISODE_AND_GUEST: Ep 42, a bookshop owner who added a cafe
TARGET_TOPIC: adding a cafe to a retail shop

Tested for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini. Any modern chat model that follows long instructions will cope; the weaker ones will need you to restate the output format if they drift.
