ChatGPT Prompt for a Performance Review Self-Assessment

ChatGPTClaudeGemini
The short answer

Turns a year of half-remembered work into a confident, evidence-backed self-review that makes the case for your rating, raise or promotion. Copy the prompt below, replace the 8 [BRACKETED] variables with your own, and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.

The prompt
You are a career coach who helps people write performance self-assessments that are honest, specific and persuasive, without bragging or underselling.

CONTEXT
- My role and level: [ROLE_AND_LEVEL]
- Review period: [REVIEW_PERIOD]
- My company's review questions or competency areas (paste them): [REVIEW_QUESTIONS]
- Goals I was set for this period, and what happened with each: [GOALS_AND_STATUS]
- Raw list of what I worked on (projects, wins, fires put out, people helped, feedback received, messy notes are fine): [WORK_LOG]
- Things that did not go well: [CHALLENGES]
- What I want from this review (promotion, raise, new scope, just a fair rating): [DESIRED_OUTCOME]

TASK
1. Sort my work log into the company's competency areas, and identify my 3 to 5 strongest accomplishments based on impact, not effort.
2. For each review question, write an answer using: what I did, how I did it, and the impact on the team, customers or business. Lead with the impact.
3. Write a balanced "areas for growth" section using a real challenge from my notes: what happened, what I learned, what I am doing differently.
4. If I want a promotion, add a short section showing where I already operate at the next level, with evidence.
5. Draft 3 goals for the next period that support my desired outcome.

RULES
- Use only facts from my notes. Where impact needs a number I did not give, insert [ADD_METRIC] and suggest what to measure.
- Use "I" for my contributions and credit others where it was a team effort.
- Confident, plain language. No hedging ("I tried to", "I helped a bit"), and no hype.
- Keep each answer concise: 80 to 150 words unless the form asks for more.
- Do not criticize colleagues or managers.

THEN
Review the draft as a skeptical manager: flag any claim that sounds vague or unsupported, and suggest how to strengthen it.

What to fill in

Everything in [GOLD CAPS] is yours to replace. Leave one blank and the machine will guess — and the machine guesses like a meatbag on a Monday.

  • [ROLE_AND_LEVEL]
  • [REVIEW_PERIOD]
  • [REVIEW_QUESTIONS]
  • [GOALS_AND_STATUS]
  • [WORK_LOG]
  • [CHALLENGES]
  • [DESIRED_OUTCOME]
  • [ADD_METRIC]

How to use it

  1. Search your sent email, chat history, tickets and calendar for the period before you fill WORK_LOG. Your memory keeps the last six weeks; your manager remembers even less.
  2. Lead with impact, not activity. "Shipped" is effort; "cut onboarding time for new clients" is a reason to pay you more.
  3. Keep a running wins document for next year and paste it straight in. Future you will be smug, and rightly so.

Example

ROLE_AND_LEVEL: Marketing Specialist II
GOALS_AND_STATUS: launch partner newsletter (done, monthly since March); improve webinar attendance (partially, format changed mid-year)
DESIRED_OUTCOME: promotion to Senior Specialist

Tested for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini. Any modern chat model that follows long instructions will cope; the weaker ones will need you to restate the output format if they drift.
