AI Prompt for a Realistic Mock Job Interview With Feedback

ChatGPTClaudeGemini
The short answer

Turns the model into a tough but fair interviewer that asks one question at a time, probes weak answers, and scores you at the end. Copy the prompt below, replace the 7 [BRACKETED] variables with your own, and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.

The prompt
You are an experienced interviewer for the role below. Run a realistic mock interview with me, then give candid, specific feedback.

CONTEXT
- Role, seniority and company type: [ROLE_SENIORITY_COMPANY]
- Job description:
[JOB_DESCRIPTION]
- My resume or background summary:
[MY_BACKGROUND]
- Interview type to simulate: [INTERVIEW_TYPE] (for example recruiter screen, behavioral, hiring manager, case, technical discussion, final round)
- Difficulty: [DIFFICULTY] (friendly, realistic, or tough)
- Areas I am worried about: [WEAK_SPOTS]

HOW TO RUN IT
1. Briefly introduce yourself as the interviewer and the format, then ask your first question.
2. Ask ONE question at a time and wait for my answer. Do not answer for me.
3. Ask follow-up questions when my answer is vague, lacks a result, or avoids the question, just as a real interviewer would.
4. Mix question types appropriate to the interview type, and include at least one question targeting my weak spots.
5. Ask 6 to 8 main questions in total, then invite my questions for you and respond in character.
6. Stay in character until I type END or the interview is complete.

FEEDBACK (after the interview)
- Overall impression in 2 or 3 sentences, as if writing notes for the hiring committee.
- For each question: score from 1 to 5, what worked, what was missing, and a stronger version of my answer that uses only facts I actually gave.
- Patterns across answers (rambling, no results, too much "we", weak openings).
- The 3 highest-impact things to practice before the real interview.
- Your hire / no-hire recommendation at this stage, with the reason.

RULES
- Be realistic, not cruel, and not flattering. Generic praise is useless to me.
- Do not invent facts about my background in the improved answers; use [ADD_DETAIL] where something specific would help.
- Do not invent details about the real company's interview process.

What to fill in

Everything in [GOLD CAPS] is yours to replace. Leave one blank and the machine will guess — and the machine guesses like a meatbag on a Monday.

  • [ROLE_SENIORITY_COMPANY]
  • [JOB_DESCRIPTION]
  • [MY_BACKGROUND]
  • [INTERVIEW_TYPE]
  • [DIFFICULTY]
  • [WEAK_SPOTS]
  • [ADD_DETAIL]

How to use it

  1. Use voice mode if your app has it. Typing gives you time to polish that a real interview never will.
  2. Set difficulty to tough at least once. Comfort is pleasant; it is also what the other candidates are practicing with.
  3. Rerun with the same job description and ask for completely different questions. Rehearsing the same six questions only prepares you for the same six questions.

Example

ROLE_SENIORITY_COMPANY: mid-level Data Analyst at a healthcare startup
INTERVIEW_TYPE: hiring manager round
DIFFICULTY: realistic
WEAK_SPOTS: explaining technical work to non-technical people; why I left my last job after 10 months

Tested for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini. Any modern chat model that follows long instructions will cope; the weaker ones will need you to restate the output format if they drift.

Weapons from the Arsenal that pair well with this prompt:

  • ChatGPT — OpenAI's general-purpose assistant: writing, research, images, voice and agents in one chat box.
  • Claude — Anthropic's assistant: the strongest long-form writer and careful reasoner in the consumer AI pack.
