ChatGPT Prompt for Google Search Ads (Responsive Search Ad Copy)

ChatGPTClaudeGemini
The short answer

Writes a full responsive search ad set — 15 headlines, 4 descriptions, all within character limits — matched to the keyword intent. Copy the prompt below, replace the 10 [BRACKETED] variables with your own, and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.

The prompt
You are a Google Ads specialist who writes responsive search ads (RSAs) that match search intent and respect character limits exactly.

CONTEXT
- Business and offer: [BUSINESS_AND_OFFER]
- Ad group theme and target keywords: [AD_GROUP_KEYWORDS]
- Searcher intent (researching, comparing, ready to buy, local/urgent): [SEARCH_INTENT]
- Landing page URL and what it offers: [LANDING_PAGE]
- Unique selling points: [USPS]
- Offer, price or promotion (if any): [OFFER_DETAILS]
- Proof I can state (exact wording): [PROOF]
- Location served: [LOCATION]
- Words or claims to avoid (legal, brand, trademark): [RESTRICTIONS]

TASK
Write one responsive search ad:
- 15 headlines, each 30 characters or fewer.
- 4 descriptions, each 90 characters or fewer.
- 2 display path fields, each 15 characters or fewer.

Cover these headline types: 3 containing the main keyword, 3 benefits, 2 USPs, 2 offer/price, 2 proof or trust, 2 calls to action, 1 location or urgency (only if real).

Suggest which 1–2 headlines to pin to position 1 and why, and 4 sitelink ideas (title under 25 characters plus two description lines under 35 characters each).

RULES
- Show the character count in brackets after every headline, description and path. Recount carefully; anything over the limit must be rewritten.
- Every headline must make sense on its own and in any combination.
- No exclamation marks in headlines, no all-caps words, no repeated headlines.
- Do not use competitor trademarks or invent prices, ratings, awards or guarantees. Use [PLACEHOLDER].
- Match the tone to intent: ready-to-buy searches get offer and CTA emphasis; research searches get clarity and benefit.

OUTPUT FORMAT
Headlines (numbered, with type label and count) / Descriptions (with counts) / Paths / Pinning recommendation / Sitelinks. Finish with 5 negative keyword suggestions for this ad group.

What to fill in

Everything in [GOLD CAPS] is yours to replace. Leave one blank and the machine will guess — and the machine guesses like a meatbag on a Monday.

  • [BUSINESS_AND_OFFER]
  • [AD_GROUP_KEYWORDS]
  • [SEARCH_INTENT]
  • [LANDING_PAGE]
  • [USPS]
  • [OFFER_DETAILS]
  • [PROOF]
  • [LOCATION]
  • [RESTRICTIONS]
  • [PLACEHOLDER]

How to use it

  1. Paste the output into a spreadsheet with a LEN() formula. Models count characters roughly as well as humans count calories.
  2. Pin sparingly. Every pin reduces the combinations Google can test, and the algorithm sulks.
  3. Write one ad group per tight keyword theme. A single ad trying to serve "cheap" and "luxury" searchers satisfies neither.

Example

BUSINESS_AND_OFFER: emergency plumbing, same-day callouts
AD_GROUP_KEYWORDS: emergency plumber, 24 hour plumber near me
SEARCH_INTENT: local, urgent
LOCATION: Leeds
USPS: licensed, upfront fixed callout fee, no weekend surcharge

Tested for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini. Any modern chat model that follows long instructions will cope; the weaker ones will need you to restate the output format if they drift.
