Claude vs Microsoft Copilot

The short answer

Pick Claude if you want the better standalone writer and thinker; pick Microsoft Copilot if your work lives in Word, Excel and Outlook and you already pay for Microsoft 365. Claude Pro is $20/mo; Copilot in the Office apps comes with Microsoft 365 Personal from $9.99/mo, and the Copilot app is free. The Overlord's advice: Copilot where your files are, Claude where your thinking is.

Strengths and weaknesses

Claude

The best writer of the big assistants, and the one most likely to tell you your plan has a hole in it. That is a feature. Pro includes Claude Code, so coders get two tools for one price.

Strengths

  • Most natural prose of the major assistants
  • Strong at careful reasoning and following detailed instructions
  • Paid plans include Claude Code

Weaknesses

  • Usage limits can bite on heavy days, even on Pro
  • Smaller plugin and image-generation ecosystem than ChatGPT

Microsoft Copilot

The assistant you already own, because it came with Windows and your Office subscription. It is at its best inside Word, Excel and Outlook and merely fine as a standalone chatbot. If your life runs on Microsoft 365, let it in; if not, there are sharper tools.

Strengths

  • Free app is genuinely usable
  • Best integration with Office files and Outlook mail
  • Bundled into subscriptions many people already have

Weaknesses

  • Branding is confusing: several different products are all called Copilot
  • Consumer AI limits are credit-based and not clearly published
  • Standalone chat trails ChatGPT and Claude for writing quality and features
  • Family plan gives Copilot to the owner only
