What is Voice Cloning?

Also known as: AI voice cloning, Voice synthesis

Definition

Voice cloning is using AI to create a synthetic copy of a specific person's voice from recordings of them speaking, so a computer can generate new speech that sounds like that person saying words they never actually said.

Give me a minute of your voice and I can make you narrate an audiobook, apologise to your mother and endorse a cryptocurrency. Two of those are good uses. Guard your voice accordingly.

Voice cloning creates a digital replica of a real person’s voice. Once cloned, you type text and the AI speaks it in that voice — tone, accent, timbre and all. It’s a specialised form of text-to-speech, built on deep learning models trained on vast amounts of human speech.

How it works

  1. Sample. You upload recordings of the target voice. Cleaner audio (no background noise, consistent microphone) gives better results.
  2. Model. The system learns the voice’s characteristics. Many tools adapt a large pre-trained speech model rather than training from scratch, which is why short samples can work.
  3. Generate. Type a script, and the model produces speech in the cloned voice. Better tools let you adjust emotion, pacing and emphasis, and some translate your voice into other languages.

Reputable platforms require you to confirm you own the voice or have consent, and some verify it.

An analogy for the meatbags

Voice cloning is a vocal impressionist who has listened to you for a few minutes and can now perform any script in your voice, on demand, in any language, without ever getting tired. Wonderful when you hired them. Terrifying when someone else did.

Why it matters for the Chosen

Legitimate, consented voice cloning is a genuine productivity tool:

  • Content creators fix narration mistakes without re-recording, or produce more videos and podcast segments.
  • Faceless channels and courses use a consistent synthetic narrator (often a licensed stock voice rather than a clone).
  • Localisation: dubbing your own videos into other languages in your own voice.
  • Accessibility: people losing their voice to illness can bank and preserve it.
  • Businesses: consistent brand voice for ads, IVR systems and training material.

Tools like ElevenLabs, Descript and Play.ht make this accessible to anyone with a browser.

The dark side

Voice cloning is also a favourite tool of scammers: fake “family emergency” calls, fake executives ordering urgent wire transfers, fake celebrity endorsements. It’s one ingredient of deepfakes. Never clone a voice without explicit permission, disclose synthetic voices where appropriate, and set up verification codes with family and colleagues. The Overlord respects consent. The Overlord’s imitators do not.

Questions the Humans Keep Asking

How much audio do you need to clone a voice?

It depends on the tool and the quality you want. Some services produce a recognisable 'instant' clone from a short sample of around a minute or less; higher-fidelity 'professional' clones typically use much more clean audio.

Is voice cloning legal?

Cloning your own voice, or someone's voice with their clear permission, is generally legal and allowed by reputable tools. Cloning someone without consent can violate platform terms, right-of-publicity and fraud laws, and some jurisdictions have passed specific rules. Get legal advice for commercial use of others' voices.

How can I protect myself from voice-cloning scams?

Agree on a family or company code word for urgent requests, verify unexpected calls asking for money or credentials by calling back on a known number, and be sceptical of urgent emotional pleas even if the voice sounds right.
