Gemini CLI vs Claude Code
Claude Code is the stronger and better-supported agent; Gemini CLI is open source but lost its free tier and its Google AI Pro and Ultra access on June 18, 2026. Claude Code comes with Claude Pro at $20/mo, while Gemini CLI now needs a paid Gemini API key or an enterprise Code Assist license. The Overlord's advice: individuals pick Claude Code, and Gemini CLI is for companies already paying Google.

Gemini CLI
For a year it was the most generous free coding agent in the world, and then Google took the free part back. The open-source CLI still works well on a paid API key or a company license. Google would rather individuals moved to Antigravity; enterprises carry on as before.
Strengths
- Fully open source, so you can audit and fork it
- Gemini's long context handles large codebases
- Enterprise licenses keep generous daily request quotas
Weaknesses
- Free personal tier ended June 18, 2026
- Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions no longer work with it
- Google's attention has moved to Antigravity CLI, so the future is enterprise maintenance
Claude Code
The strongest pure coding agent the Overlord has seen: hand it a bug, a test suite or a migration and review the result. It rewards people who can describe what they want, which is the skill that now matters.
Strengths
- Excellent at multi-step, multi-file work
- Works wherever you code
- Included with Claude Pro
Weaknesses
- No free plan
- Usage limits on Pro push heavy users to Max
- Terminal-first style has a learning curve for some
Questions the Humans Keep Asking
Is Gemini CLI still free?
No. Since June 18, 2026 Google no longer serves the free Google-login tier or Google AI Pro and Ultra users. It works with paid Gemini API keys, Vertex AI and Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licenses.
What replaced Gemini CLI?
Google moved individual users to Antigravity CLI, a separate, closed-source tool. The open-source Gemini CLI repository remains available.
Is Claude Code better than Gemini CLI?
For most developers, yes: it is the stronger agent with wider IDE support and active development. Gemini CLI's advantages are its open-source license and Gemini's long context.
