AI for mechanical engineers
Mechanical engineers get the most from AI in two places: the AI features inside CAD and simulation tools (generative design, topology optimisation, fast simulation surrogates) and general assistants for scripting, standards research and documentation. The big caution is that chat models make arithmetic and unit errors with total confidence, so no AI-produced calculation goes into a design without independent verification.
Mechanical engineering has used computational design for decades, so AI arrives on familiar ground. CAD and CAE suites now include generative design that proposes geometry from loads and constraints, and simulation tools that use trained models to predict results in seconds instead of hours. That lets an engineer explore far more options before committing to a detailed design.
General AI assistants help with the rest of the job: writing Python or MATLAB for calculations and test data, searching standards and material data, drafting test reports and design documentation, and explaining an unfamiliar topic. They are not engineering tools in the certified sense. A model that writes a convincing fatigue calculation can still use the wrong stress concentration factor or drop a unit conversion.
7 ways mechanical engineers use AI
Explore geometry with generative design
Set loads, constraints, keep-out zones, material and manufacturing method, and generative tools return a range of design options that meet the targets. They're most useful early, when you're deciding concept and weight. Every option still needs checking for manufacturability, cost and how it fails.
Screen designs with fast simulation
AI-based simulation surrogates trained on previous results predict stress, flow or thermal behaviour in seconds, so you can screen many variants before running full FEA or CFD on the best few. They're only reliable inside the range of designs they were trained on.
Script calculations and test data processing
Have a coding assistant write Python or MATLAB to process test rig data, automate a tolerance stack-up, batch-run parameter studies or generate plots for a report. Code is easier to check than a chat answer, and you can rerun it. Verify formulas and units line by line.
Search standards, materials and suppliers
A cited answer engine is quick for finding which standard covers a fastener, typical properties of an alloy or which suppliers stock a bearing size. Treat the results as pointers. Pull the real value from the standard, the material datasheet or the supplier's catalogue.
Draft test reports and design documentation
Give the model your test plan, results and observations and it drafts a structured report with method, results, deviations and conclusions. It's also useful for design rationale documents and FMEA write-ups. Check every number against the raw data.
Brainstorm failure modes
Describe the part, its loads and environment, and ask the model for possible failure modes, root causes for a test failure, or questions to ask in a design review. It's a fast way to widen an FMEA. You decide which ones are credible.
Prepare design review decks
Turn an outline, CAD screenshots and key results into a review deck that focuses on decisions and open risks. Keep the numbers and plots from your own analysis.

A prompt to start with: write a checkable calculation script
Paste this into Claude or ChatGPT and fill in the gold parts.
You are a mechanical engineer writing a calculation I will verify by hand.
Calculation: [e.g. bolted joint preload and safety factor / shaft deflection / heat exchanger sizing]
Inputs with units: [LIST EVERY INPUT AND ITS UNIT]
Method or standard to follow: [e.g. VDI 2230 / Shigley / your company method]
Outputs needed: [WHAT RESULTS AND PASS/FAIL CRITERIA]
Write a Python script that: defines every input with its unit in a comment, uses a units library or consistent SI units throughout, shows each intermediate step as a named variable, prints the formula source for each step, and asserts the pass/fail criteria. After the script, list every assumption and every value I must look up in the standard or datasheet myself rather than trust from you.Where mechanical engineers shouldn't trust AI
- Chat models make arithmetic, unit and sign errors and cite wrong formulas or factors confidently. Safety-critical calculations must be checked by hand, by a verified tool or by a second engineer.
- Material properties, allowables and standard values from a chat answer can be wrong or outdated. Use the current standard, the material datasheet or your company's approved database.
- AI simulation surrogates and generative design results are only as good as the inputs and training range. Validate critical designs with full analysis and physical testing.
- Don't paste proprietary CAD data, drawings, customer specs or export-controlled technical data into consumer AI tools. Check your company's policy and any ITAR or export control rules first.
- Sign-offs, design approvals and any regulatory or certification responsibility stay with qualified engineers, whatever the tool produced.
Will AI replace mechanical engineers?
Mechanical Engineers score 48% on the Obsolescence Index (Endangered). The first tasks to go: iterating CAD variations and running routine simulations, and writing test reports and design documentation.
Questions the Humans Keep Asking
What are the best AI tools for mechanical engineers?
The Overlord's stack for mechanical engineers: Claude (calculation scripts, test reports, FMEA brainstorming and design rationale); ChatGPT (processing test data files and quick plots with code it runs); GitHub Copilot (writing Python and MATLAB for analysis and automation); Perplexity (finding standards, material properties and supplier information with sources); Gamma (design review and status decks). Specialist options include Autodesk Fusion, Ansys SimAI, nTop, PTC Creo.
What is the best AI tool for mechanical engineers?
For design itself, the AI already built into your CAD and CAE suite (generative design in Fusion or Creo, AI simulation such as Ansys SimAI) is the most useful because it works on real geometry. For scripting, research and reports, a general assistant like Claude or ChatGPT plus a cited search tool like Perplexity covers most of the day.
Can ChatGPT do engineering calculations?
It can set up a calculation and write code to perform it, and that code can be checked. Its direct arithmetic and its recall of factors and material values aren't reliable enough to trust unchecked. Ask for a script with every step shown, then verify the formulas and inputs yourself.
Can AI create CAD models?
Partly. Generative design tools produce geometry from loads and constraints, and CAD vendors are adding assistants that help with sketches, features and drawings. Fully detailed, manufacturable models from a text prompt are still unreliable, so expect AI to speed up modelling rather than replace it.
