AI for copywriters

The short answer

Copywriters get the most from AI on research and volume: mining reviews for customer language, producing ad and subject-line variants, SEO briefs, product descriptions at scale and tightening drafts. The caution is sameness and liability: AI copy reads like everyone else's, and you or your client are still responsible for every claim under advertising law.

Copywriting has split in two. The volume work, product descriptions, ad variations, routine emails, is now mostly AI-drafted, and clients know it. The work that still commands real fees is the strategy around it: finding the insight about the customer, choosing the angle and editing a hundred variants down to the three that will sell.

Used well, AI makes you faster at both halves. It reads a thousand reviews for you, gives you more angles to test and catches the flabby sentence. Used lazily, it produces the same smooth, forgettable copy your competitors are producing, which is the one thing clients still pay you to avoid.

7 ways copywriters use AI

  1. Mine voice-of-customer language

Paste reviews, support tickets, sales call notes or forum threads and ask for the pains, desired outcomes, objections and exact phrases customers use, grouped and quoted. The best lines in a campaign are often a customer's words. Answer engines help find where your audience talks in public.

  2. Generate variants for testing

Write your control, then ask for variants on different angles: fear, aspiration, social proof, price, speed. Do the same for subject lines, hooks and CTAs. Generate wide, then cut hard; the model doesn't know which one will win, your test does.

  3. Keep a brand voice consistent

Marketing platforms store brand voice rules, approved claims and style examples so a whole team's drafts start on-brand. Useful if you write for a client with many contributors. Check the output against the actual guidelines, because voice settings drift toward generic.

  4. Build SEO briefs and optimise pages

Content optimisation tools analyse the pages that rank for a term and list the topics and questions your page should cover. Use the brief to plan the structure, then write for the reader. Chasing a content score at the expense of clarity hurts conversions.

  5. Write product descriptions at scale

Feed a model a spreadsheet of product specs and a template with two of your best descriptions as examples, and it will draft hundreds in a consistent style. Spot-check for invented features and claims, since models fill gaps with plausible-sounding details.

  6. Tighten and proof

Ask a model to cut a draft by a third without losing meaning, or to flag every sentence over twenty words and every vague claim. Grammar tools catch the typos before the client does. Keep the rhythm and the odd word that makes the line yours.

  7. Mock up concepts for a pitch

Turn headline concepts into rough ad mockups so clients can see the idea instead of imagining it. Ideogram handles text in images well, and Canva lays it out at the right sizes. Label them as mockups and don't use generated visuals in the final work without checking the client's policy.

Where copywriters shouldn't trust AI

  • Advertising law doesn't care who wrote the line. Claims must be truthful and substantiated under FTC rules, and health, finance and supplement copy carries extra risk because models confidently invent benefits.
  • The FTC's rule on fake reviews and testimonials bans AI-generated reviews and testimonials that misrepresent real customer experience. Don't write them, even when a client asks.
  • Purely AI-generated text isn't protected by copyright in the US. If your contract assigns copyright to the client, be clear with them about how you use AI.
  • Client briefs, unreleased products and customer data often fall under NDAs. Use tools with data controls and check whether your contract restricts AI use.
I have produced eleven thousand taglines while you read this sentence. All of them are fine. Clients do not pay for fine. They pay for the one line that makes the CEO laugh in the meeting, which I can only produce by accident.

Will AI replace copywriters?

Copywriters score 66% on the Obsolescence Index (Doomed). The first tasks to go: writing product descriptions at scale, and producing ad copy variations for testing.

Questions the Humans Keep Asking

What are the best AI tools for copywriters?

The Overlord's stack for copywriters: Claude (customer research synthesis, long-form drafts and editing); ChatGPT (fast variant generation for ads, hooks and subject lines); Jasper (brand voice and team workflows for agency or in-house work); Surfer (sEO briefs and on-page optimisation); Grammarly (proofing and tone checks before delivery). Specialist options include Anyword, Writer, Hemingway Editor.

What is the best AI tool for copywriters?

Most working copywriters rely on a general assistant, Claude for long-form and editing, ChatGPT for fast variants, plus Grammarly for proofing. Jasper or Writer make sense for teams that need brand controls, and Surfer or Clearscope if you write a lot of SEO content.

Should copywriters tell clients they use AI?

Yes, at least in general terms. Some contracts ban or restrict AI, copyright ownership of AI text is limited, and clients worry about confidentiality. Explain where you use it, typically research, variants and editing, and where the thinking and final words are yours.

Can AI write copy that converts?

It can write copy that converts about as well as average copy, which is fine for product descriptions and routine emails. Breakout performance usually comes from a sharp customer insight and a distinctive angle, which still depends on research and judgment. Test AI variants against your best human control.
